Google Read and Write is an extension of Google Chrome that provides extremely useful reading and writing accommodations.

To learn how to install Google Read and Write to your computer, watch this video: Google Read and Write Tutorial

*You will need Google Chrome to use this extension.

*Although my tutorial is for Mac users, it works identically for PC users

My Top 3 uses for Google Read and Write:

- Word Predict: The 2nd symbol on your Google Read and Write is the Word Predict feature. When word predict is turned on, the software will generate the most likely next word that you would need while typing. This is useful for children as they are typing if they might know the beginning sound of a word, but not know the rest of the spelling. This tool also uses the sentence structure to inform which words might come next. If your sound is turned on, you will also notice that if you move your mouse over the word, it will read it to you to make sure it is the one you were looking for.

- Speech to Text: One of Google Read and Write's most popular features is that it can turn your talking into writing! If your child is asked to complete an assignment that requires writing, and that might pose as a roadblock for them, try this out! Click on the image of the headset in the Google Read and Write toolbar. Once the microphone is enabled, anything spoken into the microphone is recorded. A word of caution: speaking clearly into the mic is important. Try using the Text to Speech tool below for proof-reading.

- Text to Speech: If there is a piece of text or instructions provided to your child, they can use the play, pause and stop buttons to listen to it! Move your cursor by clicking at the beginning of where you want to listen to. Use the play button to listen, the pause button to pause the reading where you are, and the stop button if you are finished listening to that section. This is also a great way for children to listen back to their writing, especially if they are using the Speech to Text tool mentioned above. After the child has finished creating their text, use this tool to listen to the words on the page, and make sure they are the ones you want!
